Kimmeridge Bay and Swyre Head Spectacular – SA11
Title: Kimmeridge Bay and Swyre Head Spectacular – SA11
– this walk is Sponsored by Jurassic Jaunts.
Description: A classic clockwise circular route taking in Swyre Head, the highest point on the Isle of Purbeck. Clavell’s Tower and Kimmeridge Bay, Knowle Hill, along to view Corfe Castle from the Ridgeway and back along the valley.
Kimmeridge Bay is one of the gems of the Dorset coast, with its finger-like ledges stretching far out into the sea at low tide and the fascinating strata of its cliffs, which delight geologists from around the world. The bay is also rich in wildlife and offers the rarity of an underwater nature trail for divers and snorkelers. On the cliff to the east stands Clavell’s Tower, built as a folly-come-observatory-come-summer house by John Clavell of Smedmore in 1830. To avoid the eroding cliffs, it was dismantled brick by brick 10 years ago and re-built some 25 meters inland. At 682 feet (208m), Swyre Head is the highest point on the Isle of Purbeck. To the east are Encombe House and the Golden Bowl, Hounstout and St Aldhelm’s (also St Alban’s) Head. Come marvel at the most ,breathtaking views to the west of Gad Cliff, White Nothe and Portland.
